Library Headquarters closed to the public on May 28th, 2022.  Learn more about the new Clark Family Branch construction project.

The History & Genealogy Department is temporarily relocated to the Daniel Boone Branch where staff will continue to assist researchers with their needs and any requests. 

Materials access is limited. Resources available at Daniel Boone include Missouri resources, Illinois resources for six metro area counties, St. Louis city directories and phone books, microfilms, and computer databases. Family Histories (929.2) and resources for Germanic Europe (943 A - 949.97 W) are located off-site and available upon request. Patrons may request these titles by sending an email to genealogy@slcl.org.  Item requests will be fulfilled on Wednesdays and Fridays.

FAQ

Q.  Can I bring in food or drinks?

A.  Food and drinks are not permitted in the History & Genealogy Department.

Q. Can I search the library's catalog on the Internet before I come?

A. St. Louis County Library offers an online catalog, and the History and Genealogy Department also offers online indexes and finding aids for many of its sources.

Q.  How do you organize your collections?

A.  The History & Genealogy Department is organized using the Dewey Decimal System. For genealogy, this means many of our resources are organized by state and county.  We have created a guide: Dewey Decimal Numbers for States and Counties to assist you in your research.  

Q. How do I find out what is new in your department?

A. History & Genealogy publishes new acquisitions in PastPorts newsletter. Sign up to receive email notices when a new PDF issue is available or download current and past issues.

Q. Can books be checked out from the History and Genealogy Department?

A. Books in the National Genealogical Society Book Loan Collection may be checked out with a valid St. Louis County Library card or obtained through interlibrary loan.

Q. Do you offer internet access or wifi?

A. History & Genealogy offers both computer access and wi-fi.

Q. Does History & Genealogy have Microfilm / Microfiche readers?

A. Yes, there is a digital microfilm / microfiche reader available.

Q. Can I access your subscription databases?

A. Researchers have full access to all genealogical subscription databases while in any branch of the library. A list of databases along with information about remote access is available on the library’s website.

Q. What equipment do you have for making photocopies?

A. One photocopier is available for making 8-1/2" x 11" and 11" x 17" prints. 

Q. What equipment do you have for making digital copies?

A. The photocopies will make digital copies for saving to a flash drive. The department also has an overhead book scanner that will save to a flash drive.
